Managing Behavioral Issues in Children

Whether we like it not, there are always children who still misbehave regardless of parenting styles. In this post we are going to deal with this concern. Some children’s behaviour is undesirable and it is important to understand the range, actions or mannerisms exhibited by the child so that you can evaluate what triggers him or her to do the things that are unacceptable. Let us ask ourselves: What influences the child to fall short of our expectations? Why do some children consistently behave badly? To answer these questions, it is recommended to look into the deeper reason why unwanted behaviour happens. When children act out there is usually a reason. Certainly, it needs immediate study and research to make sure that we are able to deal with it properly. It does not hurt if parents and childminders do their homework and seek advice from experts like, for example, a child psychologist.

Causes of Unwelcome Behaviour

There are many factors that affect the child’s behaviour and it is certainly best to know the reason why this happens by going back to the child’s family background.  There are some potential causes of the children’s unwelcome behaviour. They are usually common, everyday causes that help us understand the behaviour of the child. In the process of understanding the cause of a certain behaviour, it is important to examine this in detail in order to eliminate unwanted incidents when a child misbehaves. Furthermore, we should deal with these unexpected events accordingly and effectively.

The child may experience various emotional reactions and may include the following: tired, hungry, bored, unwell, frightened, anxious, frustrated, and restricted.

This type of behaviour may be a result of the following reasons:

  • not content and want to find out more and the need to determine how far you can push adults and some children;
  • oblivious of the possibilities and having no knowledge of the potential threats that can lead to a serious injury;
  • an act of exploring their environment;
  • imitating others;
  • lack of attention;
  • inability to control emotions and feelings;
  • unfair treatment and feeling sad because other people are doing something without including you;
  • worried and uneasy.

Unwelcome behaviour exhibited by some children may also be a result of not fully understanding what is expected of them. Others may have yet to overcome a learning disability, an abnormal reaction of the body like an allergy, or they are just completely lost because there are no clear, consistent boundaries to pursue.There are indeed a lot of possible causes of a child’s unwelcome behaviour. So there are different scenarios to look into in order to understand where the child is coming from and why he or she behaves badly. Of course, it may seem overwhelming to deal with these incidents and succeed. It can be a daunting task but everything will be okay as long as it is well-planned.

Let us take a deep dive on the following emotion reactions:

Tiredness and Hunger

The dangers of tiredness and hunger are very high. It is therefore important to prevent the child from feeling tired and hungry. There are several tips on avoiding tiredness and hunger. The first thing to do is to make sure that you allow the child to have a good sleep and offer a balanced meal. Lack of sleep and food can cause behavioural problems. Childminders must not allow this to happen to the child or children under their care. This is the reason why it is important to discuss the child’s dietary requirements with the parents so that he or she is given the right amount of food required.

It is also important to make a routine when it comes to the child’s rest time and meal time. A child minder should stick to it without failure to be certain that the child will not experience tiredness or hunger.

Boredom

It is best to provide the children with toys that will keep them busy. A child minder should also plan several activities that are stimulating to avoid boredom as it is considered as one of the factors that can trigger unwelcome behaviour. Expensive toys are not necessary though. What matters most is that parents and childminders spend time with the children, play and have fun with them. Do not be complacent with toys alone but rather encourage the children to use their imagination. Always be creative!
